Congregation Beth Shalom, Napa Valley's only full-service synagogue, is looking for an experienced, skilled, and engaging team player to partner with our rabbi and lay leadership to help lead us into our next chapter. CBS Napa, a 210-household Reform congregation, is a warm, inclusive, intimate, and dynamic community with a very high level of participation from its members. As the only full-time staff member aside from the rabbi, our expectations are high. The Synagogue Director will be responsible for all of the administrative and communication needs of our congregation. We are looking to engage a self-starter, someone with initiative, who works well with others, including our volunteers, board, and committee members.

The Synagogue Director of Congregation Beth Shalom of Napa Valley (CBS) is the professional employee who manages congregational operations on a day-by-day basis and works closely with the President, Board of Trustees, the Rabbi, and other employees, contractors, and support staff members. The Synagogue Director is the face of CBS to members and prospective members and has primary
responsibility for managing the financial and physical resources necessary for congregational life. This position is responsible for handling or overseeing operations, fiscal operations, facilities management, and membership. The Synagogue Director serves as the central communicator of information and
works in partnership with lay leadership and the Rabbi on congregational matters and events.

The Synagogue Director takes direction from and is accountable to the President of the Board of Trustees. The Synagogue Director is expected to have open lines of communication with the Rabbi and work collaboratively with the Youth Coordinator, CBS Camp Director, and key operational Board members overseeing Building & Property, Finance, Fundraising, and Membership. The Synagogue Director is expected to supervise the Bookkeeper and custodial service staff/contractors.

Performance Expectation

A self-starter who is proactive in anticipating synagogue needs and can both prioritize and delegate as needed. Has a strong customer service ethic, which includes showing empathy and respect to all members of the community. The ability to remain calm and organized, even while multi-tasking. Has the ability to encourage a feeling of Jewish community and ensure that all operations are conducted within the values of Judaism.

Skills Required

Comprehensive computer skills, including proficiency in all Microsoft Office products, QuickBooks and the ability to manage social media channels and 3rd party vendor offerings. Must be able to quickly learn new software products. Exhibit the ability to manage people effectively, which may include vendors, contractors, volunteers and office staff. A strong sense of operational management is a must while effectively communicating to ensure the smooth operation of the Synagogue, its staff and volunteers.

Core Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Our new Synagogue Director will be a thoughtful and collaborative professional with strong organizational skills who excels at multitasking and fosters a warm and welcoming environment for our CBS community. The Synagogue Director is responsible for the day-to-day efficient management of the organization’s administrative operations, financial affairs, property management, as well as the coordination and organization of all communications to the CBS community, staff, and community at large. Provides support to the CBS Board President, Rabbi, Board Members, staff, and congregation. Ensure Synagogue financial matters are dealt with promptly and efficiently, assist with increasing synagogue membership, maintenance and operations of facilities and grounds, and marketing of CBS to members, prospective members, and the community at large.

Educational Requirements

A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.

Experience Requirements

A minimum of five years of work experience in similar or complementary positions.
